John was in the 69th Army Division (a Chaplain's assistant) in World War II.  He attempted to go see the family relatives in Czechoslovakia after the end of the war, but the Russians would not let him cross the border.  He came home from the war and went to barber school and cut hair for a while in Erie before moving to California to start his own barber business.
