Married July 17, 1904 St.
James Church, Carthage, NY. She came to the US on
December 1, 1902 (New York) aboard the steamer Main at age 18.
She entered the US and signed her name as Meri Kurta
(Ellis Island wrote Kar...Kurla). She went to her cousin, Michael
Nagy (2352) at 21 Dutchess in Poughkeepsie, NY.
She was naturalized on March 1, 1937 in Erie,
PA. On her wedding certificate she signed it as
Maria Nagy. Mary and Andrew were members of of
Holy Family Church in Erie, PA.
Mary enjoyed making
Hulushki (cabbage, flour and onions) for the
family gatherings.
Mary kept up with some
of the old traditions from Slovakia such as wearing a
hair bun, a babushka (hair scarf), dark clothing and
always wore dresses (never pants). Mary never
learned to drive. Her family called her
"Baba".
