(Following information
provided by Andy Martin (Margetta).
Andy
Sr came from a rich family. He was born in Slovakiaand his dad owned a lot of property called Margitta
Town. His
dad was a ruler and married a peasant girl
and so got kicked out. Andy's dad
knew seven languages. After his dad died, an older brother challenged him to a duel Andy was a good shooter
(was a sharpshooter in the Hungarian army) and did not
want to kill him,
but eventually fled to Italy and then came to
America. He was Margitta then. He
met Aunt Mary in Sagamore and married her in Yatesboro
because the church
in Sagamore was not built yet.
The
three good hunters in the Kuzma family: Joseph Kuzma,
John Sargent and Andy Margetta Sr.
They in turn taught their sons. Andy was the
best, he
could shoot a
bird flying with one shot as a teenager and never lost
that touch. They all got a deer every year
Everyone admired him and his shooting skills.
He made shoes as well as fixed them. Near Sagamore,
they had a little Country store in Jew
Town, next to Sagamore. Thier store was right
next door to the present Greek Catholic Church in
Sagamore They built wagons and toys to sell in the
store also built bikes
Their two dogs Henry and Elizie helped protect
the store They also sold Christmas trees and
trimmings. When the mines closed the store went down.
Many people owed him money and they couldn't pay. Andy
finally moved his family to Erie. Andy had a sister
who became a Sister Her name was Sr JORDANA
MARGITTA.
He
rented a store on 8th and Ash and started to do well
so the landlord raised the rent. He then bought the
home on Ash Street and built the shoeshop in front of
it. Andy said they carried bags and bags of cement and
rocks for
the building. Young
Andy would come home for lunch and fix shoes, eat a
fast sandwich on
his way back to school The building still stands
today.
